Locally produced sports specials are really refreshing. KTVU has been producing Point After for decades, enjoying access to the legendary sports players of the SF 49ers. Throughout that time it’s production has evolved to the fast paced show that keeps its audience engaged. For 2013 my artists pitched redesigned graphics packages for this major production.
But I couldn’t let them have all the fun. So this was my design. We critiqued each others work before bringing in the News Director and Producers. Critiquing our own art is something I missed from Art School, so I was happy to bring that back into the department. When you get people talking about thier own techniques and intentions, it really inspires everyone to step it up a notch.
I created this look by taking an existing 3-d football model, reskinning it into a glass like crystal then adjusting the camera optics to get the right pitch. It was a happy accident to have the internal stitching to turn out as well as it did. I liked the metallic rib cage like look, which I envisioned as an element we could weld together, and use on the set. (I so wanted to practice my welding. sigh.)
